UCC News is a free publication of the Catholic University of Córdoba; it just celebrated its 24th year. In May of 2005 we were engaged to redesign the publication. The client’s objectives were to better project their identity, while at the same time attracting young readers who would see themselves reflected in the magazine’s pages.
PROJECT FILE

The publication was overly saturated with graphic elements and also placed text over images; it lacked spacing and separation between stories and columns. No foundational grid lent order to graphics, texts and images, resulting in a cluttered and chaotic page. The editorial use of graphics was also confusing and inconsistent.

We eliminated the clutter and created a much simpler look and feel. We introduced appropriate spacing to underscore important editorial elements and improve narrative flow.
Two distinct vehicles were created and blended to better serve a broader demographic:
A) Rapid-read notes for readers on the go: brief texts; more spacing between articles and highlighted titles. Introducing columns, lines and varying inks and types also served to better divide and distinguish information.
b) Extended reading for those with some time to spare: By creating a more spacious layout we were able to successfully convey the impression that narratives weren’t long and tedious; we established pausing through spacing and eliminated the possibility of visual overload. We developed an editorial standard which tied narratives and imagery.
We also designed a distinctive masthead / logo for the cover, giving the publication its first true brand identity. Editorially, the use of less figurative resolutions serves to convey something both suggestive and opinionated within.
